THE ROLE: Director, Merchandising

We’re looking for…

We are looking for a experienced merchant leader to shape the product vision, craft strategic direction, and oversee execution for a dynamic, multi-category fashion business.

The successful candidate can pivot between short and long term objectives, monitor and exploit newness and trends, build and foster relationships with key suppliers and well as identify and open new brands. You will strategically convey brand messaging, amplifying brand awareness and fostering deep engagement across key audiences.

You will cultivate a high-performing team, fostering growth through mentorship, leadership, and development. Additionally, you will collaborate cross-functionally with key partners in merchandise planning, programming, production, technology, and operations to create impactful e-commerce events that drive both top- and bottom-line success, advancing company objectives.

What You’ll Do:

  • Drive business growth by strategically analyzing past and current performance, identifying opportunities, and refining approaches for sustained success.
  • Maintain a competitive edge by actively monitoring industry trends and analyzing the evolving market landscape to adapt strategies effectively.
  • Partner with the merchandise planning team to devise buying and inventory strategies for both Rue La La and Gilt.
  • Identify and secure relevant target brands that resonate with members. Allocate specific merchandise to Rue La La and/or Gilt in order to maintain a strong brand identity for both channels.
  • Effectively communicate category strategies to leadership, SVPs, and cross-functional teams, ensuring alignment, informed decision-making, and business impact.
  • Partner with stakeholders and external partners to provide support with coordination of event calendar, operations, and logistics to achieve successful and profitable event execution.

  • 8-10 years of experience in retail or e-commerce with direct buying experience.
  • Product obsessed with experience in leveraging market trends, data, and a critical eye to anticipate customer needs (combining both the “science” and “art” of merchandising)
  • Exceptional ability to cultivate meaningful relationships, leveraging interpersonal skills to foster collaboration, drive engagement, and build lasting partnerships.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop a high performing team
  • Expertise in crafting merchandising strategies, coordinating cross-functional partnerships to drive alignment, innovation, and business growth.
  • Capable of planning strategic event cadence optimizing inventory efficiency and profitability
  • Strong negotiating skills delivering profitability and the highest value to the member consistent with financial plan expectations

Expected Base Salary Range: $145,000 - $185,000

This role can be based in Boston, MA or New York, NY and requires going into the office at least 2 days per week.

Our goal is to support, reward and compensate the entire individual. Depending on role eligibility, your offer may also include bonus/commission, stock options, 401(k) participation, paid time off, medical, dental, vision and basic life insurance. Therefore, final offer amounts may vary from the amount stated.
